Philosophy, Minor
Philosophy is an investigation of the enduring questions facing humanity: What is the human being? How ought we live? What is our relationship to the world around us and the transcendent? Philosophy also encourages students to be reflective. It asks students to identify and critically evaluate their personal beliefs about self, communities and the world at large in light of various intellectual traditions. The Philosophy minor encourages students to explore such questions, and integrate the insights that they gain with what they have learned in other programs of study at Marquette.
The minor in philosophy consists of seven courses (21 credit hours). All minors take two required courses (6 credit hours). Students taking the general philosophy minor (without a concentration) take any five philosophy electives (15 credit hours). Students taking a minor with a concentration take three courses from their selected area of concentration (9 credit hours) plus two further philosophy electives (6 credit hours). With their advisor’s approval, students may choose one upper-level course outside philosophy to count either as a philosophy elective or as a philosophy concentration course.
