GRMN 1003 Intensive Elementary German (4 credits)
First year German course, and the first course in the core language sequence. Development of listening, speaking, reading and writing in German. Cultural awareness is developed through exposure to a wide range of authentic texts and materials. Emphasis on communicative practice and interaction in German. No previous German experience is required.
Prerequisite: No previous German; or by departmental placement.

GRMN 2003 Intensive Intermediate German (4 credits)
Second-year intensive German course. Continuation of GRMN 1003. Completes the second language requirement. Continued development of listening, speaking, reading and writing in German. Cultural readings from the German-speaking world are discussed. Emphasis on communicative practice and interaction in German, and the development of intermediate mid language proficiency required for the German Studies major and minor.

Examine the structures of the German language, and thereby also your own native language’s structure, and learn how language influences how one thinks about, perceives and describes the world. Students not only review but also build on the grammar and vocabulary that has already been learned. Demonstrate learning through reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Combining reading and writing, students explore the genre of short story in Germany following WWII as a communication of human experience in historical and cultural context. Students experience discussions of interpretive questions, and together arrive at a characterization of a “good interpretation.” Written assignments are designed to develop this ability to produce a sound interpretation. Taught in English. Knowledge of German language is not required.

GRMN 3550 German Reunification: The Collision of Two Worlds (3 credits)
Examines the collision of two political and economic philosophies within the boundaries of what we view as one country, Germany. Through historical documents, political, sociological and economic texts, literature and film as well as firsthand interviews, reflection and role play, the history of the Wall, its tearing down and the global and individual impact is explored. Topics include identity, class, gender, “colonization,” linguistics and education. Taught in English. Knowledge of German language is not required.

Uses the specific example of German Jewry during the 20th Century in order to understand how specific communities contribute to a society/ societies and how specific communities can be made into outsiders and non-human through rhetoric and propaganda, to the point of genocide. Taught in English.

Approach the metropolis of Berlin from multiple angles using a variety of media. Explore the communities and values that engendered revolutionary movements centered in Berlin. Examine the diversity of Berlin’s population and its evolution in light of multiple waves of immigration. Study Berlin’s impact of artistic, political and economic swings throughout the world. Understand the significance of contributions of individuals in Berlin and Germany to global politics, music, architecture and cultural memory. Taught in English.
