Introduction to the field of Latinx Studies and the history of Latinx communities in the United States. Examines the conditions that have led to the growth of Latinx populations and their expansion from regional communities to the country’s largest national minority. Through course readings, multimedia, and an interdisciplinary research project, explores topics relevant to the study of Latinx peoples. Topics may include migration and immigration, ethno-racial identities, labor and class, imperialism, bilingualism, education, gender, and sexuality.

Understand the language formulas, rules of etiquette and cultural competencies necessary for building trust and interacting across cultures respectfully. Learn to work inclusively in cross-cultural, international teams and reflect on students' own cultures. Special focus on communities speaking Arabic (Arab American and Middle East), Chinese (Asian American, China, and Taiwan), French (France, Canada, and Francophone Africa), Italian (Italy and Italian American), German, Russian and Spanish (Latinx American and Latin America).

Introduces the basics of film cognition and the language of film analysis. Offers a critical overview of current tendencies in national filmmaking and the production of television series with a focus on transnational circulation of knowledge. Includes viewing subtitled films/series, discussing their circulation and reception, writing reviews and producing video essays.

Focus on a major area of literary study concerned with women writers and/or women's issues in foreign literatures. Taught in English, knowledge of a foreign language not required. May not be counted toward fulfillment of the second language requirement.

Offers an introduction to the analysis of food systems from decolonial, environmentalist and cultural perspectives. Explores representations of food, history of foodstuffs and food practices and their histories in different parts of the world.

Learn about the ways in which linguistic diversity mediates social justice in a world that is undergoing rapid change due to increasing migration and globalization. Explore the following questions: What is the relationship between language and power? How does linguistic prejudice contribute to social inequality? How does linguistic stratification contribute to cultural domination? Engage with scholarly and journalistic work that focuses on the linguistic dimensions of social inequality and examine real-world instances of linguistic injustice.

Study and application of the fundamental principles of effective second language instruction through the exploration of second language acquisition theory, the development of skills for selecting, organizing, providing, and assessing effective second language learning opportunities; practice of instructional technique within clinical contexts; and reflection on teaching performance. Clinical experience requirement: three hours per week for a total of forty hours. Required of all Education majors.

An introduction to the art, epistolary writing and literary and art criticism of Vincent Van Gogh through the theme of the literary tableau. Taught in English.

An umbrella course to offer occasional cross-language topics taught in a foreign language or in English about languages, literatures and cultures.

Designed to initiate qualified undergraduates in the techniques and discipline of scholarly literary or linguistic research by concentrated work in an interdisciplinary field. Emphasis on the critical reading and analysis of primary and/or secondary sources in English translation. Specific subjects of seminar to be announced. Does not count toward fulfillment of academic major or minor.
